Thanks for your reply Romy,The Johnson/RCA sockets had crossed my mind. The reason I'm looking for that specific type is that the contact surface of the pins is so much larger (much like with the Yamamoto).I could buy yamamoto's and not worry at all, ...

Well Paul,I want to thank you very much for your comments. I appreciate what you mentioned about Occam's Razor, but I do feel that here I am not trying to make a new theory of electronics necessarily. Rather I am just trying to develop th...

Perhaps I am asking for trouble, but did anyone had any experience with those SE mosfet creations made by Susan Parker?Preamp uses Romy`s beloved 6C33C tube and the 10W power amp has two transformers, two resistors, one mosfet and that`s pretty much ...
A few things that juts comes to might mind regarding the Cosecant. Gordon says that it is a Passive Multibit DAC with a single Shinko Tantulum resistor “because only a resistor can be a linear device over the entire audio ...

Hi,
As to the best transformers souding more transparent than the best resistors, I'll believe it when I (don't?) hear it. You claim to have heard this but I most certainly haven't.
Well, the claim is no...

Romy, it sucks, but the different good DHT output tubes seem to want trimming to deliver their best. IMO, the ideal thing would be a quiet way to do this for both channels, not just to match channels but to get the best sound from the particular tub...

Thanx Romy,
Yes, fitting "time produced" into the matrix is an important piece of the puzzle, don't think I mentioned that one.
Holco resistors are a great example, are in my notes, along with other resistors, and caps, that have changed.&n...

The TAP TVC does happen support a fully balanced topology, for whatever that's worth. I have not discovered anything difinitive about this for myself, however. I can say that I do not consider the unit's situational neutrality as anything...

How is one sure of finding/matching the actual turnovers used for the recording, since, as you mention, the labels don't always tell the whole story?Or is this just another way to fiddle with the sound?Does the switching get/stay out of the...

"The only thing that I ma afraid that it might give the effect of a correcting low mass of MC cartridges with too shallow VTA, if you know what I mean…"Romy: I passed over this important sentence... yes, "forcing" something is someway "faking" (an eu...

OK, maybe I got too zealous with the notch filter for the Reps. I aimed to bring it down 6 dB at ~2.2k Hz, using .47 mH and 10 uF against 10 Ohms for the notch, with the Reps itself at 7 Ohms. Right now, drums are too backed off, there is no "hair"...
As you pointed out, if the input circuitry and driver operating points are fixed, your only options are to lose it via coupling or the output stage. Maybe split them, i.e. use a 1:0.5 ratio on the inter-stage tra...

So what is with the ferrite beads? Do you find they are necessary? Seems to me the resistors right on the socket would be good enough. Especially with the grounding of the center pins. I run beads all the time in my digital si...
what is your experience with passive transformer based preamps? Is this the ultimate way to get a perfect variable gain? Or do you prefer to use an active preamp?
Chris,
I think the terms of ultimate might be...
OK, this is useful also, in that you have not noted a "pattern" as you say. My point is closer to your suggestion, that I do change cart --- and sometimes buy new ones, B U T I do not buy other SUT (at least I try to avoid it). I'...

Ok, Paul, this is the info that I needed, thank you!My Hagtech anti-RIAA has 50R output imp. at -60dB output for MC.Unfortunately my load resistors are soldered and in a very painful place,(for some reason the circuit did not accper the loading R at ...

Well, it is getting interesting. I was able to make my Hillock TV-2 tester to test the 6C33C. I spend a few hours to filtering the plate voltage and replacing a couple resistors to 50W instead of the 5W. The plate coils in TV-2 is 100mA but it looks ...
The remote is not a problem. Using a Xantech distributer, repeaters, and electric eye you can configure the two passive remotes in a foolproof, or nearly foolpoof, manner for about $75-100 total. Since I already had the basic Xa...

I didn't say "it's impossible." I'm saying "I don't know a format that would be functional @ this time." Gotta work now; will try to condense into something more resembling one page of notes for resistors or something & po...

From my view, I would add a dedicated filament transformer for the DHT. It's clean, simple and a known performer. I'd also be inclined to drop the support of a 6A and stick to a 2A3 only. Alternately, if you have no need for a center-tap on the DHT ...
Yes, it is imposable to have + 0.4V on the grid, 0.0V at input, with R5 resistor in place and the gas tubes outputting +150V and -150V. My apologies, I meant to say I have minus 4.4v on the grid with the inputs shorted. Then I...

The very much non-definitive EAR 834P Modification Guide by Loesch Thorsten
Hi,Given that Romy already let the proverbial Cat out of the Bag (pun intended) I think I may have to make good here....
The EAR 834P is a very simple, but rather smartly ...
- Regarding C2 the 2000uF/450v cap, he suggests to replace it with 5 x 200uF/200V by Mundorf (he can get them for a good price, probably better those five caps than a single 2000/450). I'm not sure about this replacement, it...

First off, I forgot to mention an interesting observation: Before running the sweeps (previous post), since the drivers in the upper-bass horns are new, I decided to verify/optimize rear chamber volume (they are easily adjustable)... I wasn't expecti...

So, the first DSET is still downstairs on the electronics bench and I am back to work for a while, but not too hard and not for too long (I hope). I've added all the filters and checked and tested and changed some more things and decided that it was...
Romy, I am not clear why you would worry about DC if you can set the RC where you want it and mute input. Biggest problem, of course, is HF, since it takes bugger all to blow those ribbons. But I thought you had that ...

Here is the signal box:The design is double mono past the VR's. Including the bias.
The coupling caps are Arcotronics KP172 from RS-Online, quite prised by Thorsten Loesch. THey are sitting on
sorbothane pads. The air caps are: 1) 365pF some +/- s...

Similar to the famous sexist tail that women can be only ether pretty or smart the midbass horns unfortunately behave in the very same way: they can be only nicely placed in a room or they can sound good. You want the horn to place in a specific ...
Do you have a
“final version” of the schematic anywhere?
I think that the one you
have might be recognized as final. The Rev2 was without DHT in MF and Rev3 was
with it. I did not do anything else with the amp af...
